I am inspired to paint my response to a memory, interaction, and relationship. Many of my portraits are inspired by the vibrant Mpondo villagers living on the majestic, pristine Transkei Coast, Pondoland, where my family has had the privilege to experience the warmth of the culture and the generosity of spirit. My family and I have learned so much from our years of involvement with the community and I am grateful to them for accepting our family and friends into their community. Humbled and privileged, we are reminded of what is truly important in life.
Each character with unique qualities, emotions, and gestures ensures I am always inspired. However, it’s also about the play of light on features that lure me into playing with transparencies and opaques, creating a deep richness that is magnificent to paint but intriguing for the viewer. With a limited colour palette and essential marks, I aim to create timeless portraits.
