Many of my portraits are of rural villagers from a once small and remote village, which is now growing and opening up to modcons of the world. Situated on the Wild Coast (former Transkei) it is a village which is trying to hold on to its precious traditions, values and morals. I personally have learnt so much from our years of involvement with the village and am grateful to the villagers for accepting our family and friends into their community.
African faces are amazing to paint, their dark skin reflects the myriad of colours around allowing me to play with transparencies and opaques creating deep richness that is not only magnificent to paint but intriguing for the viewer. Each character with their unique qualities, characteristics, emotions and impulses ensure I am always inspired. I paint from life as well as photographic references.
